Supportive Care

Volunteers working within the Supportive Care Program help to enhance the quality of life of persons facing a life threatening illness in the communities throughout Chatham-Kent.  As the volunteer you will visit an adult person on a one to one regular basis.  You will develop a rapport with the Person Served and/or the family based on trust, open-mindedness, sharing and caring, warmth and sympathy.  To accomplish this you will sit with the Person Served, talking with them or simply listening, listen to music, read to them, write notes or letters  as requested, take the Person Served and/or their family members for walks or drives as appropriate.  

The time commitment for this position is a minimum of one visit per week and one to eight hours per visit.  Visits are days, evenings and nights and a one year commitment is essential.  The visit may take place in the clients private home, hospital, nursing home or rest home.  

Specific to this program, thirty hours of Supportive Care Level 1 Training is provided.  Ongoing training is optional as offered.
